I was born in London, England and grew up in a typical north London suburb with my parents and older sister. I enjoy the hustle and bustle of city life therefore I have adapted well to Wuhan. I feel that the location of our college is ideal for me, as it is situated by the tranquil setting of East Lake but only a short bus ride to the city centre. I have a passion for travelling and experiencing cultures that are different to mine. I visited China four years ago spending a fortnight in Shanghai. During my time in Shanghai I fell in love with the city and Chinese culture and promised myself I would return to China again if I had the chance to.
When I finished 6th form I took a year out from my studies and worked full time in order to save up enough money to fund my education while I was at university. I attended Nottingham Trent University (Nottingham, UK) in 2008 and did a three year BA in International Relations eventually graduating in the summer of 2011 with a second class, first division honour.
My time at Trent was very fulfilling. I met a number of people from across the UK and the world. My course in particular attracted a large number of foreign students including many Chinese. I found this to be the most interesting part of University as it gave me the chance to meet an eclectic mix of people who all had different upbringings and outlooks on life but all shared a passion for International Relations.
I juggled my studies with being a reservist in the British Army; this was an important part of my life for a long time. I would train every Tuesday night and most weekends. At the end of each year I would also train for 2-4 weeks at a time. At times it was difficult to balance the demands of University work with training but learned to overcome this challenge. I enjoyed the job and found it to be an exceptionally rewarding experience. The training was mentally and physically tough but I would always feel a great sense of satisfaction at the end of it.
I enjoy my job in Wuhan immensely, I have only taught for two weeks but feel that I will continue to take pleasure in teaching the students at the college throughout the academic year. I like being able to use my imagination and think on my feet, something I will no doubt be doing nearly everyday while teaching here. Additionally while working and living in China I have been given the perfect opportunity to learn the language. As China is increasingly becoming an economic power on the world stage, I feel that learning Chinese will help me enormously for the future. For the time being however I am happy to teach English and will focus much of my energy on becoming a better teacher.
